Link of the Week: Carmelite Monks
This site belongs to the Carmelite Monks of Wyoming, a unique community of cloistered men, carrying on a tradition that stems from Old Testament times, and was given definitive form by St. John of the Cross and St. Teresa of Avila. The Carmel of the Immaculate Heart of Mary has the support of Bishop David L. Ricken of the Catholic Diocese of Cheyenne. The monks in this new contemplative monastery live a life of faithful orthodoxy to the Magisterium, where joy and peace abound in a manly, agrarian way of life. They live a full, reverent, and traditional Carmelite liturgical life, with the Divine Office and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass being prayed in Latin with Gregorian Chant. While the site does not abound with what are usually considered resources, it does provide a nice glimpse of cloistered monastic life. Link of the Week: The Saint Noël Chabanel Responsorial Psalm Project
The Saint Noël Chabanel Responsorial Psalm ProjectThe Saint Noël Chabanel Responsorial Psalm Project offers to the Church Universal contemporary, modal, and supremely artistic organ/vocal settings of the Responsorial Psalms based on Gregorian chant. The verses are set to Gregorian psalm tones, while the refrains are usually in meter, in order to facilitate congregational singing. The scores are offered completely free of charge, and can be downloaded in a matter of seconds. The site is easy to navigate, and there are no strings attached. One of the truly splendid aspects of this project is that various options are given for each Responsorial Psalm. For example, there are numerous reharmonizations of the refrains, allowing the organist to instantly choose the most appropriate style for each individual situation or simply vary the accompaniment for artistic purposes. Another unique feature is the expert layout, which puts each word of every verse right underneath the corresponding note, and furthermore provides stupendously legible typesetting without a single page turn. On January 8th of this year, the Church militant lost Fr. Richard John Neuhaus. His life was filled with engagement in the public square through the exercise of his faith which manifested itself in his marching with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and being an advisor to presidents. His own spiritual journey took him from his formation as a Lutheran to being ordained a priest in the Roman Catholic Church. In 1990, he founded the Institute on Religion and Public Life. The journal of the Institute is First Things. This is the home page of First Things, a monthly journal published by The Institute on Religion and Public Life, an interreligious, nonpartisan research and education institute whose purpose is to advance a religiously informed public philosophy for the ordering of society. Link of the Week: The Social Agenda
Students, teachers, and all those who seek a better knowledge of the social doctrine of the Church will find on the Social Agenda a collection of the central statements of the Roman Pontiffs from a range of texts, including papal encyclicals, apostolic letters, and Conciliar documents, on matters relating to politics, economics, and culture. The selections are arranged thematically according to the significant subject areas of Catholic social doctrine. Under each subject heading, the quotations appear in pedagogical—as opposed to chronological or magisterial—order, with each subject area opening with a quotation that explains the issue at hand. The website is an online version of The Social Agenda: A Collection of Magisterial Texts and is a publication of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace. The book may be printed, downloaded as a PDF or purchased. The site is available in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian and Polish. Link of the Week: The Acton Institute
The Acton Institute says of itself, "The Mission of the Acton Institute is to promote a free and virtuous society characterized by individual liberty and sustained by religious principles." This site offers a wonderfully wide-range wealth of resources on applying Catholic and Christian concerns and heritage to practical problems and issues, with an emphasis on liberty and free enterprise. It provides a desperately needed antidote to the many liberal political sites that promote themselves as Catholic and involving "social justice." Link of the Week: March for Life
Late in October 1973, grassroots prolife leaders became concerned that January 22, 1974, might come and go without properly memorializing the Supreme Court's infamous abortion decisions and without petitioning Congress for redress. No established right-to-life organization was prepared to undertake the planning, financial and operational responsibilities for a high impact prolife March on the U.S. Capitol. But, grassroots prolifers wanted to march! About thirty prolife veterans resolved themselves into a committee and began making plans for the first March for Life. On January 22, 1974, the first March for Life was held on the West Steps of the Capitol. An estimated 20,000 committed prolife Americans rallied that day on behalf of our preborn brothers and sisters. In 1974, the March for Life was incorporated as a non-profit, non-partisan, non-sectarian organization. Our numbers have gradually risen through the years despite reduced numbers from the snow in 2000 and the terrible 9/11 attacks just months before the March 2002. These growing numbers give testimony to the increasing ranks of prolife Americans and to the importance of the March's work.
